Aircraft 42-29555 (Centaur) failed to return on September 28, 1943. It was shot down by a single German night fighter and crashed at Landringhausen, South of Wunsdorf, 11 miles South-West of Hannover.
It was the first 422nd squadron B-17 lost on a night mission. The mission on 27th - 28th September was number 6, since commercing night operations at the beginning of that month. It was a pure bombing mission, flying as support to a major bombing mission by the RAF that night.
