Private Goempel was a replacement soldier who recently joined Company F and was unknown to the other members of his platoon. According to the 293 file PVT Goempel was last seen at point of departure, embarking on an assault boat to an objective on the other side of the Sauer river in Luxembourg.
When the objective was reached and a bridgehead established, PVT Goempel could not be located. Due to heavy artillery and small arms fire from the enemy, it was impossible to conduct a search for PVT Goempel at the time.
